Congratulations for taking the first step to a healthier you

I can best be described as a physician for whole person well-care using education, counseling, and medical treatment (including diet and weight loss) to restore a sense of well-being.  I am a Family Medicine and Community Health physician who investigates the biopsychosocial causes for what keeps you from feeling your best (depression, anxiety, pain, insomnia, obesity, etc.), then treats them.

Other than blah blah blah <generic description here>, what does that mean?  It means I am a “but” doctor (no, not THAT kind)….. When you say: I feel sad, but I don’t know why:  I know what I’m supposed to do, but I’m too tired to do it;  I am extremely stressed out, but don’t know how to cope;  I want to lose weight, but nothing works or I lost weight, but gained it all back;  I know I shouldn’t be eating this, but I can’t stop myself; My doctor says I have <insert diagnosis here>, but I don’t know what that means……My job is to find reasons for the “but” and help you eliminate them.

In what are typically hour long appointments, I perform a comprehensive medical (including mental), social, and well-being assessment, then partner with you to create a plan that fits your life and lifestyle to determine where easy and small changes will have the largest impact.  Some might refer to this as health coaching, but since I’m a doctor, I provide medical treatment as well.

So why diet and weight loss? Because it is true, we are what we eat, and  weight (more accurately BMI*) and wellness are tied together and so weight/BMI has to be addressed for effective treatment and prevention for any medical condition – physical and psychological.

So, if you decide a change is in order because you feel one way wishing you felt another, or you are determined that today will be better than the days before, I am here to help.

  • BMI = Body Mass Index – a person’s weight in kilograms (kg) divided by his or her height in meters squared. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) now defines normal weight, overweight, and obesity according to BMI rather than the traditional height/weight charts.
